The United Kingdom’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) reprimanded Betfred, a wagering firm, for a promotion displayed on the PrestonPlayz channel. PrestonPlayz is incredibly popular with young viewers due to its Minecraft content. The ASA expressed concern that broadcasting a gambling advertisement during a program geared towards children implied Betfred was encouraging underage gambling, a serious offense.
The advertisement itself promoted Betfred’s internet casino, the type featuring flashing lights and noises that create an illusion of winning even when losing. It appeared during one of PrestonPlayz’s videos and included a voice-over enticing viewers to register and participate.
Following a complaint lodged with the ASA, the authority concurred that it was inappropriate for Betfred to advertise on a channel with a substantial young audience.
Betfred attempted to justify their actions by claiming adherence to all regulations and stating their advertising team only placed the promotion on channels intended for adults. They highlighted that Roku, the platform hosting PrestonPlayz, requires users to confirm they are 18 years or older.
However, the ASA remained unconvinced. They acknowledged the ease with which children can misrepresent their age and expressed doubts about Roku’s efforts to prevent underage viewers from accessing inappropriate content.
The United Kingdom’s advertising regulatory body, the Advertising Standards Authority, has criticized Betfred for a recent advertisement, despite the gambling firm’s assertion that it targets adults. The ASA worries that the advertisement’s aesthetic, resembling programs popular among children, increases the likelihood of children viewing it.
This incident represents the latest in a series of ASA rulings concerning gambling promotions. Mecca Bingo faced recent censure for an Instagram update featuring Baga Chipz, which the ASA deemed to irresponsibly suggest that gambling could enhance self-perception or confidence. In a separate instance, the ASA expressed apprehensions regarding boxer Anthony Joshua’s appeal to individuals under 18 in a Betfreds tweet.
The ASA has instructed Betfred to ensure its advertisements are not displayed where a significant portion of the audience is below the age of 18.
