The Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) has applauded the suggestions put forth by a panel, led by Justice R.M Lodha, to decriminalize sports wagering in India. CII contends that this action could generate substantial income that could be utilized to enhance athletic facilities and promote travel. They posit that numerous nations already employ sports betting and gaming as a method to finance public initiatives and support the advancement of athletics.
This is not the first instance where CII has championed this alteration. They have been advocating for the legitimization of sports betting since 2012, collaborating with both the national and regional administrations.
Prior to the drafting of any legislation, CII stresses the significance of conferring with stakeholders within the realm of sports.
The appeal for legalization arises after the Lodha commission, established to probe corruption in cricket, determined that legalizing betting could, in fact, assist in curbing match-fixing controversies. This holds particular relevance following the 2015 episode where the proprietors of two prominent cricket clubs, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, were penalized for their participation in wagering on games.
