Bet365, Flutter Entertainment, Entain, Betsson Group, Betway Group, Yolo Group, Netbet Group, KTO Group and Rei do Pitaco are all founding members of the Brazilian Institute for Responsible Gambling (IBJR).
The organization will operate in various areas to comprehend the industry and how it can be incorporated into the Brazilian economy.
While Brazil’s legislative body voted to legalize sports wagering in 2018, the process of regulating sports betting in Brazil continues. However, a recent series of match-fixing scandals have generated new optimism that legalization is imminent.
“We aim to assist in building a secure and regulated environment to serve consumers, while also providing financial support for the public sector and creating a sustainable operating environment for businesses,” stated André Gelfi, Managing Director of Betsson Group Brazil, who was chosen as President of the IBJR.
“The concept of responsibility is evident in the institute’s name precisely because it is the primary motivator for all stakeholders involved in a successful regulated market.”
Within these locations, wagering on sporting events is viewed as a form of amusement that contributes to the preservation of the integrity of athletic competitions.
It is evident that delicate facets of the industry, such as excessive gambling and financial illicit activities, necessitate a robust, rational, and accountable approach.
The significance of regulation is of the utmost importance, as Rafael Marcondes, Legal Director of Rei do Pitaco, who also holds the same position within the newly formed group, highlighted.
He stated, “The United States and Brazil legalized sports betting in 2018.” “While the North American nation has achieved swift progress in state-level regulation, yielding favorable outcomes, notably in terms of taxation, Brazil has fallen behind, resulting in a surge of companies that are not committed to responsible gambling, which has tarnished the market’s reputation and failed to provide consumers with minimal protections.”
Gelfi added, “No other nation possesses such a propitious environment to construct successful regulation that can serve as a model for the globe. Governments can glean insights from the experiences of nations with successful regulatory frameworks and adapt them to local circumstances.”
IBJR is the most recent industry organization to be established in Brazil, following the introduction of the new non-profit sports integrity body, the Brazilian Association for the Protection of Sports Integrity (Abradie), earlier this month.
The organization was established by Genius Sports, Entain, Rei do Pitaco (a daily fantasy sports operator), and legal firms Bichara e Motta and Maia Yoshiyasu Advogados.
